El Litoral, which literally translates to “The Coast”, rightly sits facing the ocean on the Malecón, sandwiched between the American Embassy and the Hotel Nacional. It opened its doors a little over a year ago. Its name, as well as its maritime location, would suggest a menu dominated by fish and seafood, but there are also plenty of other offerings, including various Italian pastas and risottos dishes–even an octopus focaccia. Appetizers include chorizo casserole and salmon carpaccio among others, but we went for the tempura bell peppers filled with cod, which were hearty and delicious. For the main dish, we chose the grilled snapper, which was slightly dry but still delicious and pleasant. While the interior is elegantly decorated and air conditioned, we recommend sitting on the terrace facing the Malecón and enjoying the ocean breeze with a light lunch. Don’t miss the salad bar, which might be the best in Havana.
