How Does Internet Work in Cuba
An Internet Cafe in Old Havana

Connectivity in Cuba is limited, and U.S. Cell phones won’t have coverage. A quick primer for how to stay in touch.

Internet Access

Internet in Cuba is expensive and slow, and only a small percentage of the population enjoys regular Internet access. A larger number of people have access to a local “intranet” that provides connectivity to certain local sites but not the World Wide Web.

The Cuban government has announced that by 2020, 50 percent of its population will have access to the Internet from their homes and 60 percent from their mobile devices. State Internet operator Etecsa is also increasing the number of Internet access points or Internet cafes. There are about 120 such establishments in Cuba, with over a dozen in Havana. Connection fees at Internet cafes averages from $2 CUC to $4 CUC per hour.

Many hotels provide basic Internet access, some at hefty fees.
